John William est né dans un petit village de Côte d'Ivoire, au bord de la lagune Ebrié. Enlevé à sa mère dès 18 mois, puis définitivement déraciné à 8 ans, il se retrouve dans un pensionnat français. La guerre éclate, John William qui travaillait dans une usine est arrêté et déporté. Témoin et victime de la plus grande monstruosité de notre siècle, il survit à son séjour au camp de la mort de Neuengamme et réapprend à vivre après ce cauchemar. Commence alors une carrière brillante, dans le show biz" des années 50 (tout le monde connaît encore ses grands succès : « Si toi aussi tu m'abandonnes », ou la « chanson de Lara »). Mais en 68, il entreprend une sorte de nouvelle carrière s'éloignant du music-hall, il donne de plus en plus de récitals de "modern spiritual" dans les églises, trouvant là un moyen d'exprimer les convictions profondes qui l'animent : sa foi et son combat pour la dignité de tout homme.--John William was born in a little village on the Ivory Coast, on the banks of the Ebrié lagoon. War broke out, John William, who then worked in a factory, was arrested and deported. Both victim and witness of the greatest horror of our century, he survived the death camp at Neuengamme and learned to live again after the nightmare. Then began a brilliant career in the ‘show-biz' world of the fifties (everyone still remembers his greatest hits, ‘Si toi aussi tu m'abandonnes', or the ‘Chanson de Lara'). But in '68, he moved away from the music-hall, giving more and more ‘modern spiritual' recitals in churches, finding in this new activity a means of expressing the deep beliefs that motivate him: his faith and his fight for the respect of each human being's dignity."
